THE FAUN

The faun has been exhibited now in many different situations other than the standard performance outlined below. One of the strongest being the Doge's Ball at Venice Carnival: In the middle of the reception hall at the biggest costume party during the carnival at one of the oldest and most beautiful renaissance palaces along the Grand Canal and surrounded by the guests in their own extraordinary costumes The Faun is led onto a decorated podium where the guests approach to feed, (although that can be messy or at least untidy) admire or just be alarmed.

There is always a communication with individuals in the audience which is extremely intimate and close to that which happens usually with needy animals; this can create jealousy from boyfriends and girlfriends etc. and embarrassment and macho behaviour in some of the men if they meet me by chance after the performance"

Usual habitat - The hills and woodland of northern Europe

Background - The Phooka is traditionally an Irish goblin of varying and variable size. It is almost always human in part (the 'part' varies from type to type). All Phooka have the ability to change size to some extent and some change form to that of an eagle when the mood takes them. Their relationship with man is generally kind; often hoisting lost and no doubt bewildered travellers onto their backs and seeing them out of trouble. Cynical or aggressive man folk, however, can be taken for terrifying gallops across wild terrain. The Phooka is mute but can issue a guttural hum or scream if frightened or threatened. Note - Once captured they can no longer change shape or form… but they can lose patience.

THE PERFORMANCE:

The Faun is lead into a chained off enclosure by a white-coated assistant who then stays and explains him to the people/audience, usually to small groups or individuals. She (the balance tends to be better with a female assistant) presents him to them, and them to him. She is the verbal communication between actor and public, which alleviates any fear, prevents any 'hooligan' type jokes and encourages the public to express their reactions. The non-verbal communication between the Faun and the people, and the strange combination of animal and human physicality and behaviour is the mainstay of the show.

NB: In character terms the assistant is "a veterinary or mythology student" working at the nearby "X research centre "where the faun was brought after his capture and from where he will soon be released back into the wild. She is of course an actress capable of improvising explanations for the faun's reactions, moods and behaviour.  

IL FAUNO

Una delle apparizioni più inquietanti del Fauno fu al Ballo del Doge di Venezia durante il carnevale. In mezzo alla sala d'arrivo e d'aperitivo, e con tutt'intorno gli ospiti nei loro meravigliosi costumi. il Fauno apparve su una pedana dove gli invitati venivano a dargli da mangiare, con sensazioni di stupore e meraviglia

"In Italia la reazione è solitamente di incredulità: la gente (gente che sembra normale) chiede se Il Fauno è un fauno vero!.
C'è sempre un contatto comunicativo intimo con le persone del pubblico simile a quello che intercorre tra un uomo ed un animale bisognoso di affetto. A volta questo è così estremo, che una specie di gelosia nasce nel rapporto tra i fidanzati/e e noto un certo imbarazzo, seguito da un comportamento eccessivamente maschile, negli uomini che incontro di nuovo una volta finito lo spettacolo."

Ambiente Naturale - Colline boschive dell'Europa settentrionale

Storia - I Phooka sono folletti tradizionalmente irlandesi di diverse e variabili dimensioni ; sono spesso in parte umani (la parte varia da tipo a tipo). Tutti i Phooka hanno l'abilita di cambiare le loro misure e qualcuno di loro può trasformarsi in aquila a suo piacimento. I loro rapporto con l'uomo è generalmente gentile; spesso aiutano viaggiatori smarriti (e senza dubbio perplessi), caricandoli sulle loro spalle e riportandoli sulla retta via. Però…persone ciniche o aggressive possono essere da loro trasportate al galoppo, a fortissima velocità, attraverso paesaggi selvaggi ed impervi. I Phooka sono muti ma possono emettere un suono gutturale se hanno paura o si sentano minacciati. N.B. - Una volta catturati non possono più trasformarsi… ma possono però perdere la pazienza.

LO SPETTACOLO:

Il fauno e guidato dentro ad un recinto da un'assistente con un camice bianco la quale lo 'racconterà' al pubblico (a piccoli gruppi) nel corso dello spettacolo. Lei (l'equilibro è migliore se l'assistente è femmina) presenta lui a loro, e loro a lui. L'assistente è la comunicazione verbale tra l'attore ed il pubblico, alleviando le paure, prevenendo eventuali molestie ed incoraggiando il pubblico ad esprimere le proprie sensazioni. La comunicazione non-verbale tra il fauno ed il pubblico, e la combinazione della fisicità umana ed animale, sono il senso profondo della rappresentazione.

N.B. Nello spettacolo l'assistente è 'una studentessa di mitologia o di veterinaria “ che lavora in un 'centro di ricerca “ ('situato' vicino al luogo in cui avviene la performance) dove è stato portato il fauno dopo la sua cattura e dal quale sarà liberato riportandolo nel territorio d'origine. L'attrice che interpreta l'assistente è capace di improvvisare le spiegazioni sugli umori e comportamenti del fauno, approfondendo ed ampliandone la conoscenza
